Celtic & Historical music show with Simon Spalding in San Pedro Jan 20 & 21
Simon Spalding, long a member of this group but resident in North Carolina for
some years, will be back in town next week for a show of sea shanties, Celtic,
and historical music. He will be playing as a duo with James Hendricks, whose
specialty is 19th Century and Civil War music, but who also plays ragtime and
early popular music. Simon plays fiddle, octave mandolin, ukulele, banjo, and
Chinese er-hu; James plays piano, button accordion, percussion, and brass
instruments. They'll be harmonizing and playing on material from both of their
repertoires, so even if you've heard them before this show will be a new
experience.
Venue is the Whale & Ale in San Pedro, 327 West 7th Street - shows are 20 and 21
January, Thursday and Friday. Admission is $7.00 - good food and a wide
selection of beers, whiskeys, and other libations are available. Phone
310-832-0363 for a table reservation and request a good view so you are not in
Siberia - not all tables have a good view of the stage.

This is a period event.
Things to remember! This is not Faire, your behavior will be different because you audience will be different. We are being judged in a variety of mysterious categories by unknown judges. In general our guests will ask more engaged and generally better informed questions, and they will stay for a more complete answer. I expect you will respond in 1st person, in dialect as well as you are able. If you are unable to answer at this level, don't bs an answer, look for a senior member an pretend that your "inglis" is not up to the job. A hackle or a feather, or whom ever you think can answer. If it becomes necessary for you to move out side of 1st person to give a complete answer, do so, but make at least a symbolic attempt to physically distance your self from your character by announcing that you are going to do so. This can be done best by "please sir if you would step this way, " On this I must speak privily." asking them to follow and by really move away. another method Announce discretely as before and lower your volume and try to use the same rhythm you use in 1st person but deal with the subject in a modern way. And lastly, if you must deal with a danger or something requiring an immediate answer, use your normal modern tone and structure and speak clearly. and as loudly as the situation requires.
Your appearance and the correctness of that appearance is also very important. Get all the gewgaws off you costume, present your self in you best clothes, in there best condition. don't be afraid of the iron. Everything should be mended and clean, If it shines polish it, if it is leather oil it, if metal, de rust it. These are laudable things to be working on in public. repair it. If you are using borrowed items, bring them up to snuff to the best of your ability. Be clean and mended. Be available, there will be duty rosters. We have a variety of parade like duties, as well as operating the camp.
Check in with your senior concerning what supplies to bring, I know that often fire wood is needed, as well as water. All for now. more later.

- McGonagall NiteOn Saturday night, Sept. 24, we shall gather to celebrate the death of the worst poet in the English language, William Topaz McGonagall. The evening progresses like a Burns Night, but in reverse. We start with whiskey and cigars, and bad poetry. Then dessert (Tipsy Laird or Dark Chocolate Mousse), and more bad poetry. Then dinner (standing rib roast, roasted potatoes, vegetable), and more bad poetry; then soup and more bad poetry; then appetizers, and even more bad poetry.

"The Hogmanay Theme is Any Alice, any Wonderland. Thru 2 books, at least
a 1/2 dozen movies, assorted comic books, and the Jefferson Airplane.
Your milage may vary. Dressing up funny is an intrinsically dangerous
activity. Be sure to read and follow all safely instruction. One pill
makes you larger and one pill makes you small. As little as a price tag

Annual Scottish Festival & Games at the Queen Mary
Saturday, February 16 & Sunday, February 17, 2013
Mike Miller will have parking passes. No camping, we are on the concrete
again this year.
Event will be Sat and Sun 16th and 17th. We have a tight
window for setup we have to be set up by 8 am so we need to be there
early gate opens at 9. We are in front of the dome, across from the
band competition area.
Food will be supplied on Sat ONLY. Pending how many people
show up there might be left overs other wise we will need to fend for
ourselves. Cathy is very sick and may not show at all.
We will be on cement so plan for it. We will not have the
trailer so a lot of things we are normally use to we will not have there.
Yet again parking will be a bit difficult this year. We
have 24 pink parking passes. Nothing has been set in stone but so far
this is how we will be giving the distribution of the tickets to people
who show up. There will be someone stationed at the entrance gate when
you drive in, there will be a set time for you to arrive. The event is
from 9am to 6pm, please arrive mostly dressed around 8am for this event
this will make things much easier and please be on time. There will be
someone stationed on the gate until from 7 to 8:30.
